The Oxford Handbook of Roman Britain

This chapter explores the appearance of people in Roman Britain and how this changed depending on the time, the place, and an individual’s particular circumstances. It explains what evidence we have for reconstructing costume and how different identities were created by costume choices. The role of women is a particular focus, both as creators of the cloth and as a group who become increasingly visible in the archaeological record via the development of many new types of finds associated with dress and appearance. An overview of useful sources that will allow the reader to explore the literature more fully is provided.
